Age discrimination – I have been on the receiving end and likely have been guilty of it in my foolish youth. I am 45 years old, so it leaves me to wonder what the next 25 years of my career will look like?
I recently heard a Silicon Valley news report that investors are not as willing to lend to start-up tech company when the borrower is over 42 – due to the concern that middle-aged people are less creative!
Working in Silicon Valley this week I see the struggle. Business is back but something is different – perhaps a little less bravado and a little more maturity? It is pure conjecture on my part, but I am observing a different approach around town. I see more suits and even some greying temples, which makes sense when you consider how the major companies in the area have grown and aged in the past 10-15 years. The radical ideas of Apple, Google, and Facebook eventually became the establishment. Now what? There are new companies and CEO’s in town, but it is impossible to know which of the thousand ideas will catch on. History keeps repeating, but in double-time.
